The Biblioteca Nacional is the oldest library in its class in America. It was founded in 1777 as the Real Biblioteca Publica de Santafe de Bogota (Royal Public Library of Santafe de Bogota) and since then, it has become the repository of Colombian heritage of books and publications. It is devoted to the compilation and preservation of its collection and dissemination among the public.

On July 20 1938 the current location was inaugurated in the calle 24 between the Carreras 5th and6th; it is considered a National Monument. At the library you will find documents with historic and artistic value such as prints, sound recordings and audiovisual works, in addition to cultural activities and exhibitions.
